Distraction. Complexity. Exhaustion. Fear.
Sometime not that long ago I noticed that these had begun to define my being. When I first recognized it, I wasn’t sure what to do. I wasn’t sure if there was anything to do. I knew that the answer was Jesus, but there was too much distracting me from Him. I felt like I had lost Him.
I still don’t have all the answers, but I do believe there is another way to live and be in the world today. I have started to call my journey suburban monasticism.
What is The Suburban Monastery?
First of all, what you’ll find here is not a call to escape or to run away. Contrary to popular opinion, monasteries are not escape hatches, but gathering places. That is what I hope to cultivate here. A gathering of those who understand that something in our modern world is off, and aren’t quite sure what to do about it. A gathering of those who do not want to accept the status quo, but who don’t want to hide from it either. A gathering of those who long for simplicity, focus, and faith in a world of chaos and anxiety. A gathering of those who need community in a world pulled apart. A gathering of mini-van driving, dance-class chaperoning, dinner cooking, 9-5 working people who long for more Jesus in a world that crowds Him out.
The core values at this suburban monastery are: Simplicity, generosity, Scripture, prayer, community, and rest.
What you can expect
Each week I’ll be offering reflection on my own journey as a suburban monastic. Please subscribe and consider donating if you are able. I will never claim to have figured out how to live in the tension of our modern world, but I will offer another way. Whether it is the right way or your way will be up for you to see.
In addition, I will be sharing my sermons on a (mostly) semi-weekly schedule.
Spiritual Direction
Spiritual Direction (or Soul Care) is a relationship in which I help guide followers of Jesus along the path of discipleship by equipping the other person to pay attention to the work and Word of God in their life. Whereas a marriage counselor might help two people in their relationship with each other, my goal is to help you in your relationship with God. My goal is not to give orders or neat and tidy five step plans, but to listen to and notice what God is doing in your life.
Spiritual direction is free for members of my church, and $100/session for all others. I typically meet with directees one time a month.
